Hills & Eastern Suburbs — What Makes Midland Different
The hills district creates reception challenges you won't find on the coastal plain. Swan View, Helena Valley, and Darlington all sit in valleys where the terrain blocks direct line-of-sight to the Bickley transmitter. Ironically, you're geographically close to the tower but the hills between you and it can kill the signal. Shaun regularly installs taller masts and high-gain antennas in the hills to clear the ridgeline — sometimes an extra two metres of mast height is the difference between zero channels and all of them.
Down on the flats around Guildford and Woodbridge, the issue is different — older homes near the Swan River have clay soil that shifts seasonally, and over the years that movement loosens antenna mounts and guy-wire tension. If your antenna's leaning or wobbling in the wind, it's probably not the antenna itself but the mounting that's let go. A re-mount with proper chemical anchors into the rafters fixes it permanently, and Shaun carries the gear in the van.
